For Biracial Children, a Look at Attitudes (washingtonpost.com)

"You have to be very careful to explain this on a level that they understand," said Francis Wardle, director of the Center for the Study of Biracial Children in Denver. "Kids don't understand race. They don't understand who is codified by race, and how it differs from country to country."

Wardle said Williams's decision to proclaim her heritage "is a wonderful opportunity to look at the history of race in this country."

He said he does not see that happening yet, because news coverage has focused solely on Williams, rather than on the vast population of other mixed-race Americans from her era who were abandoned by white parents.

America is a very diverse country. I wish there were more public examples of mixed race citizens in the news. Unfortunately, the only reason this one is in the news is that it "scandalizes" the Senator.

I was sitting in my living room, reading a book and my daughter was flipping through the channels on TV. I looked up when I heard an advertisement for a comic on HBO. The show was the Latin Kings, and the comic was saying "Where else can you find a Hispanic woman dating an Irish man driving a Japanese car to a Chinese restaurant."

We need more people to recognize that fact. The comics are able to get ideas out and make people laugh at their thoughts. I hope it continues and that everyone is accepted for their qualities rather than their race.

The Republicans are getting ahead of the democrats in this area. They have an equality of greed which accepts anyone based on the number of dollars they have. We need to extend that and make people realize that there is a class based racism which the democrats are afraid to mention.

IT WON'T BE LONG BEFORE THAT IS ALL THAT EXISTS IN THE WORLD IS BIRACIAL CHILDREN AND IF YOU BELIEVE IN THE BIBLE AND READ IT...YOU'LL FIND IT! I HAVE 7 BIRACIAL CHILDREN AND 4 OF THEM WERE LITERALLY STOLEN FROM ME BECAUSE OF THEIR RACE AND BECAUSE OF PREJUSTICE. I HAVE 3 LEFT AND I WILL PROTECT THEM TO MY DEATH. MAY GOD BLESS, PROTECT AND MULTIPLY THE BIRACIAL CHILDREN OF THIS WORLD TO ASTONISHING PROPORTIONS THIS YEAR.

i am a biracial child and i am the minority of this world and i like it

i'm a biracial "child". i'm 18, but when it comes to growing up, i'm a little behind. i believe i ultimately "found" myself last week. it's true enough that i have a black bf and hang out with all the black pple around campus... but it wasn't by choice. i guess i just fit in better with the minority. not that i hate my mom or the white pple... they just don't seem as willing to talk to me to be honest. but seriously, the less i think about and try to identify myself with any american standard, i do much better focusing on what my character is and what i have to bring to the table. most importantly, just being me...b/c to be honest, i'm the whitest black person i know. lol

Being biracial is a gift given to us by God. I revel in my difference from others, and respect thier difference as well. I do not identify myself as black or white, but rather as a child of God sent to show the world that biracial children are one of the most beautiful things in the world, for they show that races can intertwine in peaceful and beautiful ways.

"Race" is not even biologically real, the genes of "different races" that DO differ are some 0.001 percent (it's a fact, geneticists have stated this over and over again).

Another fact is is that the majority of black people in the U.$ are in fact multiracial. Many come from European, African and Indigneous descent *Indigneous, North, Central AND South America* (another fact but quite a few black people either deny/ignore this or don't really know about their ancestory). So I think that having pride in one's race is a bit questionable to say the least. Being proud of your heritage/ancestory is one thing but being proud of your skin color (and the man made creation of "race") is another.

speaking from a Canadian prospective, being biracial is not unique in my community...canada is very diverse and its people are encouraged to love & accept all parts of its culture...most of the people I know are from multicultrual, multiethnic, intercultrual etc...the world is full of diversity...diversity should be encouraged and embraced----the only way to beat racism is to accept differences--not to tolerate differences

I am relived to know the strength of biracial children is strong, this coming from the mother of the most beautifull biracial 2 year old little girl. I hope and pray everyday she grows up to be an openminded indepedant woman thank you for your points of view love, a mom

I just had a newphew born last night who is bi-racial. We are a white family and this is the 1st experience we have ever had with this situation. I do not want the child to ever feel less loved the the other children in the family and I am really concerned that he will. His heritage is not by his choice and I pray he is not punished for it in the future.

Iam biracial, married to an englishman, we have two great kids and we have never experienced racism here in africa {Zambia}.

We are planning to move to canada, this worries me becouse my children have never experienced any racism whatsoever,I dont know how I would handle and deal with that sort of situation.

I am the mother of a bi-racial child and she is absolutely gorgeous. When I put her in daycare I was a little weary as to how she would fit in... only to find out that all of the children but for 2 are "mixed", biracial or whatever. She fits in great and has a wonderful time.

His heritage is not by his choice and I pray he is not punished for it in the future.

vk7205, way to go for making it sound like you think his heritage is something he should be ashamed of or troubled by! love and acceptance should start at home, but if you can't give them to him hopefully he will find people who can and will.

vivienne, not that racism doesn't also exist in canada, but as elle smith said, there are lots of biracial kids and grownups there also, especially in major cities like vancouver and toronto. your kids won't be alone!

With hopes that folks can learn to have fun while educating themselves and their children about being at least bi-cultural, I self-servingly recommend my book, The Chopsticks-Fork Principle, A Memoir and Manual. In it I happily discuss "ordinary" issues like:

Can the Tooth Fairy survive The Melting Pot?

How do you say "I love you" in English? In Chinese? in America? Whether Identity Crises and toilet training are more stressful with or without a subconscious (as is the case in a Confucian world), etc.

I am half black and half white and am proud to be mixed. Contrary to what most other half-black/half-white people experience, I hardly recieved racism from whites my entire life. I always was ridiculed and teased by blacks growing up because I have straight, fine "white people" hair. At one period in my life I felt so rejected by blacks that I labeled myself as white, but now I realize how incredibly stupid that was and want to serve as an advocate for other biracial people.

i am of black and white and with that goes to say i have been very confused growin up why i couldn't play with other kids because they didn't like me. my first experince with being of a different race came when i was on a play ground and i wasn't allowed to swing with kids who were black because i had a white mother. i didn't understand so i just sat by myself and cried. as i went into highschool it was worse, i was known as a half breeded bitch or a racial mistake i couldn't understand why i was treated so different all because i was biracial. I have always been known to stand for what i believe in and i pray that god have mercy on the souls that have rejected my race. i hope they get over the fact that the world is changing and there is no such thing as "the pure" race.

These comments are very helpful. I have a 10 month old son that is mexican, caucasian, and black. I new that it would be a challenge to raise my son. However, I will do my best to prepare him in our society. That is why I am searching for comments from diverse people, understand what they are going through, and how to prepare him.
