Most factory-built windows are actually pretty modern looking, even the wood ones, as long as you steer away from double-hung windows or a lot of muntins. It just depends on what operation or breakups you get. It's generally what's around the window that makes it look frou-frou (i.e. drapes, mouldings, shutters, etc.). I've done projects that were very clean and modern looking with straight-off-the-shelf Marvin or Andersen windows.
