all hail Louise Gluck

her poems about flowers remind me of the pain i feel.

I studied with her for a few years a decade ago. This is quite unexpected news!

"I wished for what I always wish for. I wished for another poem". -- LG

Every poet knows that wish,

knows how the turn of a perfect phrase

is next-of-kin to a royal flush,

and headier than wine or praise;

And every poet knows the fear

that each new poem sees their dower filled,

and comes to their own terms with the idea

that a poem is a gift, not something willed.
