cutting off your nose to spite your face
On a stop to view a contained corner of the nation's largest current wildfire -- in southwestern Oregon -- Bush will reveal a plan to reduce "unnecessary regulatory obstacles" and allow selective thinning of national forests.Forest fire problem? We'll just cut down all the forests! By the way, would timber dollars help re-elect a Republican representative?

How 'bout we just burn down all the forests? Even the environmentalists in the CNN article agree that some of the trees have gotta go. Perhaps rules limiting loggers to younger trees (those more vulnerable to flames?) would be an improvement? Is it just that it's a National Forest or would this logging be wrong in a private forest as well? Should we stop building houses out of wood?
Look at the Sierra Club's report. It's so pretty.

CNN article, come on now.
Most environmentalists are not opposed to cutting trails (sorry I forgot the technical term) which are wide swaths, where fire would hopefully stop if it tried to cross, in selected ares of the forests.
Unfortunately, most of our problems lie with man, not nature. Nature starts fires when it needs to, as a renewal process. Half of the fires we've seen in the last few months have been started by HUMANS.
Those fires have been exacerbated by droughts due to global warming induced climate fluctuations.
Thinning of the forests could possibly help, but this is very unlikely. It would only help in very unique situations, and the detriment to the local ecosystems would most likely not be worth it.
Logging corporations do not help when they log and leave behind all of the kindling. They take the large trees and often leave the combustibles behind. I think this is much of the problem with the legislation. I haven't read much about it yet.
What will most likely happen is that the companies will gain a larger hand in usually untouched areas. They don't need the little trees - so they'll cut the larger ones too.
I'm sick of typing. The whole shebang is completely unecessary.
